Pack the area in advance

Pack the area in advance but think about what you’ll need during the demolition and renovation period. For items that you can live without for the duration, pack to maximize space and store in the most out-of-the-way place. For items you may need daily, pack
according to use and frequency and keep them handy. And just as in a home move, label everything.
Plan in advance

Plan in advance to keep the kids and pets away from the demolition area.
Safety first!

Safety first! Cut off the electricity to the area being demo’d. Depending on the scope of the demolition, there could be the possibility of interfering with or damaging live electrical wires, a safety and fire hazard. You can always run power from another room if light is needed.

Shut off water to the demo area as well. You don’t want a hole knocked in a pressurized water line, unintentionally adding water damage to the scope of the demolition.
Gear up for a good cleaning when your project is done

Drywall and related demolition dust gets everywhere. Seal off air ducts and all openings to the demolition area with plastic sheets and blue painter’s tape. But remember: no matter how well you tape and seal, some dust will creep into your nooks and crannies. Gear up for a good cleaning when your project is done.

Experienced demolition crews know that siting key elements such as asbestos as well as gas, water and electrical lines is good preparation for having the right safety gear and equipment to get the job done.
Be clear about what is to remain

The demo team needs to know what stays in the demolition area, if anything, and if they need to take more care so you may preserve and protect drywall, trim or the like. Outside the demo area, you might consider how to protect your furniture and
furnishings – cover furniture with sheets, remove art from shelves and walls, etc...

If you know Habitat for Humanity or a like organization will want your castoffs, plan ahead. If hiring a professional demolition team, preserving cabinetry or other furnishings for reuse will take more time and care, and so, a little more budget.
